About USIP

The U.S. Institute of Peace is America’s premier peacebuilding organization. Congress founded USIP in 1984 as an independent, nonpartisan Institute dedicated to promoting peace, security and U.S. interests by preventing and resolving violent conflict.

In our Washington, D.C. headquarters and around the world, USIP provides the U.S. government, international government partners, civil society and those working for peace with proven peacebuilding approaches, practical policy research and a platform to convene diverse stakeholders.

USIP’s on-the-ground programming is cost-effective for the American taxpayer, helping people in other countries resolve their own grievances and conflicts before the United States is drawn in or U.S. interests are threatened. We train frontline peacebuilders on pioneering mediation, negotiation and dialogue strategies. Our research provides policy options for the U.S. government and peacebuilding methods for a range of diverse stakeholders. That research is buttressed by our experience building peace in some of the world’s most fragile, conflict-prone regions.

USIP’s unique status allows the Institute to pursue its mission by linking research, policy, training, analysis and direct action to support those working to build a more peaceful world.
